Also, for our second interview in August, we’re staying in Eastern Europe. Our next stop is Slovakia, where we sat down with Country Manager Monika Sarmirova.
When did you join GCT and how long have you been with the company?
I joined GCT in November 2022 as a Country Manager, so I have now been with the company for almost four years. It has been a very interesting and rewarding journey, with many opportunities to learn, take on new responsibilities, and work with colleagues and teams from different countries.
Which office are you based in?
I am based in Bratislava, Slovakia. I work primarily from the Bratislava office, but my role also involves working with colleagues, sites, and teams across different countries.
Could you tell us more about your role and your professional background?
As a Country Manager, I am responsible for supporting and overseeing clinical trial activities in my country, working closely with study teams, investigators, sites and sponsors. No two days are really the same, which is something I enjoy.
Before joining GCT, I had already spent many years working in clinical research, gaining experience in different roles and across different types of studies. This background has helped me to understand not only the operational side of clinical trials, but also how important communication, flexibility, and good relationships are to successful study delivery.
Was the job what you expected when you first joined? Did anything surprise you?
The role was very much what I expected in terms of the clinical research responsibilities, but I was pleasantly surprised by how much collaboration there is across GCT. Even though we work in different countries and sometimes from different time zones, there is a strong sense that we are one team.
What’s changed at the company since you’ve joined?
A lot has changed and grown since I joined in 2022. GCT has expanded its activities, teams and capabilities, and I have seen the company become increasingly international and connected.
At the same time, I think one of the positive things is that despite the growth, the company has retained a relatively personal atmosphere. People still know each other, communicate directly, and are willing to help, which is something I really appreciate.
What have you learned during your time at GCT?
I have learned that flexibility is probably one of the most important skills in clinical research. Even when you have a very good plan, something unexpected will eventually happen.
I have also learned not to underestimate the importance of communication. A problem can often be solved much more easily when people communicate early and openly. And finally, I have learned that you do not have to solve everything on your own — having good colleagues and knowing when to ask for support makes a big difference.
What motivates you to come to work each day?
I like that my work has a purpose and that every day brings something different. Clinical research can be challenging, but knowing that the work we do contributes to bringing potential new treatments to patients gives it a much bigger meaning.
What do you believe GCT’s mission is?
I believe GCT’s mission is ultimately about helping bring new and better treatments to patients by delivering high-quality clinical research.
Of course, there are many processes, systems and responsibilities involved in clinical trials, but behind all of that there are real patients and investigators who are depending on us to do our jobs properly.
What are some of your favorite activities outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially my daughter. I also like staying active – Pilates and cycling are my favorite activities.
What does GCT’s 25th anniversary mean to you personally?
Although I have been with GCT for only part of its 25-year journey, being part of the company during such an important milestone makes me feel proud.
Twenty-five years is a significant achievement, especially in an industry that is constantly changing. To me, the anniversary represents the experience, relationships and hard work of all the people who have contributed to GCT over the years.
