August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Awareness Month. This month`s goal is to educate people on the importance of taking care of children`s eyes.

Eye health and good vision play an important role in the child’s physical, mental, and social development. Uncorrected vision problems can impair child development, interfere with learning, and even lead to permanent vision loss. Early detection and treatment of eye problems are critical. An eye disease that is diagnosed and treated in early childhood can slow progression and avoid irreversible damage in adulthood.

Common signs of concern are frequent eye friction, creasing of the eyes, tilting or flipping of the head to observe objects. The child may also close their eyes, or you may notice that their eyes are wandering.

Children are encouraged to have regular comprehensive eye screenings in order to promptly detect eye conditions that may need further intervention.

The focus of clinical trials in ophthalmology has extended to research in gene therapy, immunomodulation, and regenerative medicine. As the interest in clinical research expands, more and more diagnostic and therapeutic options become available to ophthalmic patients.
